Cyril blazo _ xyz

8 Apr 2010 - 5 Jun 2010

The XYZ group connects common creative activities of Milan Tittel (1966) and Matej Gavula (1972) who have been acting under this brand since 1997. Both authors, originally sculptors, create within the intentions of inter-media statements and use impulses of conceptualism and minimalism.
The agenda of the XYZ is based on a quiet work which is the marking of situations. The XYZ select and examine situations which have an unpretentious, routine, almost banal character. Photographs and video work here mainly as a means of documenting, nevertheless, their usage is not completely exhausted. The using of video limits the action; it addresses it to viewers and leaves it to flow as a live, non -arranged space composition. The result of these, sometime coincidentally found, sometime assisted object situations are works oscillating among video, audio installations and sculpture objects. This oscillation could be named as the medially transformed sculpture.

In the XYZ videos, the sculpture is presented as a fusion of material reactions of different levels and directions, as a fluid medium, as an open space net or place activated to the situation. The purpose of the sculpture is not to take a given place by placing it in space, it is otherwise, its purpose is to examine space relations with their connections to social and political elements. Works by the XYZ are therefore characteristic for their balancing between unstableness and stability, using of matter and its getting rid of. They do not miss a huge dose of humour and self-sarcasm. They parody economical relationships, not omitting those which drive the mechanisms of artistic management. They generate and transmit vibrations in a play between the moment of digital record and objective presence of plastic matter. Their typical components are impulses with an open end.( Daniel Grúň )
The group with its nature is an atycipal and rare on Slovak art scene. There are some subliminal sympathies in the relation towards work of Cyril Blažo. He uses founded illustrations and reproductions in older magazines and books. He recycles them using decollage technique and reverse printed list of select reproduction. In the work of Cyril Blažo motives interfere to a new “ inverted ” optics. Come to a result there is a series of humorous moments, ironic and sarcastic scenes and comments. These little interventions, advancement or just assigning the right name open space for a new content, new stories.

cyril blažo

the classic on the slovak artistic scene. connected with the entrance in the 1990s. he works with simple media and the simplest way possible, and with the minimum of means he reaches great effect. in his creative work there is a dominance of paper, collage, photography, drawing, work with found objects and a mutual combination of these techniques. in the auction we offer a unique collection item- the connection of two pictures without using glue."we appreciate classical statues also because they were made from one piece of stone." (c.blažo).

xyz- matej gavula and milan tittel

both artists have been performing as a creative tandem called xyz for almost ten years. being sculptors they focus on testing this only seemingly outmoded medium. the result of their non-inventive examination are 3d objects as well as projections, photographs, or generally designed projects whose result may be equally material and ephemeral/situational. they approach the sculpture as a fluid medium (d. grúň).
